Second Step curriculum has been implemented in all PK-5th grade classes at ShadowGlen Elementary School. The Second Step program is a research-based curriculum designed to promote school success, school connectedness, and a safe and respectful school climate. Second Step curriculum is also designed to prevent problem behaviors, antisocial behavior, peer rejection, impulsivity and low academic achievement by helping students develop self-regulation skills, social-emotional competencies, and school connectedness. |
Pre-Kindergarten The Second Step early learning program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Children gain skills to help them be better learners, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, and ask for help. 2. Empathy: Children learn to identify and understand their own and others' feelings. Children also learn how to show care for others. 3. Emotion Management: Children learn how to calm down when they have strong feelings, such as worry or anger. 4. Friendship Skills and Problem Solving: Children learn how to make and keep friends and to solve problems with others in a positive way. |
Kinder- Fifth gradeThe Second Step program will be used to teach the following critical skills:
1. Skills For Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self- talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork. 2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others' feelings. Students also learn how to take another's perspective and how to show compassion. 3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger. 4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way. |
